BECAUSE HE CARES' LIVING LEGACY PROJECT
African American History Makers
Living Legacy Poster
THE PROJECT:
Working with high school and college students Because He Cares is preserving the history of African American leaders who have contributed to the growth and development of Summit County. Under the supervision and direction of Darryl Brake, project coordinator, the students will conduct research, identify potential candidates interview candidates, videotape interviews, and produce the historical DVD’s which will be kept by Because He Cares Ministries and preserved in the Summit County Library for use by residents and students.
THE VALUE:
This project's value is conveyed in the following quote from Judy James, Division Manager for the Akron Summit County Library when asked about the need for a media based historical record of local African American leaders. “We (the Summit County Library) would be very interested in receiving copies of any interviews you conduct with local African American leaders. A few years ago, the History Makers, www.thehistorymakers.com, conducted oral history interviews with Janet Purnell, Dorothy Jackson, Art Minson, Gloria Rookard, and Judge Rouhlac here at the library. The Special Collections Division holds copies of these interviews. With the recent loss of Mr. Minson and Judge Rouhlac, we are reminded of the importance of continuing to document the lives of these individuals. Thank you for considering the Library as a repository for these interviews. If you choose to donate copies to us, you may be assured of their preservation and availability to future generations.”

Facts About Bullying *
- Almost 30% of youth in the United States (or over 5.7 million) are estimated to be involved in bullying as either a bully, a target of bullying, or both.
- Children and teens who come from homes where parents provide little emotional support for their children, fail to monitor their activities, or have little involvement in their lives, are at greater risk for engaging in bullying behavior.
- Children and youth who are bullied are typically anxious, insecure, and cautious and suffer from low self-esteem, rarely defending themselves or retaliating when confronted by students who bully them.
- There appears to be a strong relationship between bullying other students and experiencing later legal and criminal programs as an adult.
DVD's along with discussion points are available to educators and parents. To order your copy call 330-762-8884 or e-mail us at darryl@bhcministry.org.
Kids Give Back!!! A school wide canned food drive for OPEN M was organized by the students, and donated food was delivered to OPEN-M for distribution to needy families. The home room donating the most food items was rewarded with a PIZZA PARTY!!!
