Summer 2008 Child Enrichment Program

This year’s Child Enrichment program ended with a presentation by the students at Jubilee Temple on Sunday, August 18, 2008. This special event was the culminating activity to an already very exciting and educational summer program that ministered to the needs of the almost 30 registered students between the ages of 4 to 14 year old.

The ”CEP” theme was Champions for Christ.  The children and young people learned that being a champion for Christ is the key component to being a champion in life. The supporting Bible verse is found in 1 Peter 2:9:   “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

During the presentation the students shared what they had learned through personal testimonies, a question and answer session, and through other creative activities.  One student named Cody said,  “I wish CEP was every day and not just on Saturdays”; and our Junior High teacher found it “one of my most rewarding teaching experiences!!”  We are excited about the success of this year’s program and are looking forward to making the 2009 Child Enrichment program even better.

Highlights from the 2007/2008 Student Leadership Program

Student Leadership Development Program participants at Perkins Middle School enjoyed an informal conversation with Dr. Fred Johnson, History Professor at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.  Dr. Johnson talked with the students about the responsibilities of leadership and leadership historically within the African American context.

As a part of the students' leadership project and community service activity, they organized a school-wide canned food drive for OPEN-M.  Working with school personnel, students brought in hundreds of food items!!  The class donating the largest amount of canned food won a pizza party!!

The SLD program is designed to educate students about the responsibility of leadership, involve them in community service "give back" activities, and give them an opportunity to use their creative abilities to produce educational materials for their peers.  This year's class produced an "Anti-Bullying" DVD along with a study guide for use by students and educators.  The DVD will be shown to the more than 600 students attending Perkins!
