BECAUSE HE CARES
A talent based ministry providing hope and options to the urban community through outreach, education, and prevention services.

OUTREACH:

Live Drama Ministry – Since 1980, tens of thousands of people have heard the message of hope made possible through Jesus Christ. Plays like “No Choice Left”, “Days Gone By”, “A Matter of Attitude”, “The Grip” and “Street Life” have been presented in correctional facilities, drug rehab centers, to youth groups, for ministry retreats, in schools, universities, urban ministries and in churches. These gripping dramas reflect the issues of contemporary life and offer hope through Jesus Christ. To learn what programs are currently being offered or to become involved in our drama outreach ministry call 330-762-8884 or visit our “Programs and Services” web page.

Testimonies:

Former gang member whose brother had been shot and killed accepts Christ as his Savior after the presentation of the play “The Grip”. It was a moment that changed his life, and he went on to accept the call to ministry.

After the play “A New Way of Fighting” scores of young people rededicated their lives to the Lord.

“It’s so real”, recovering addicts state after seeing a presentation of “The Grip”. This play’s powerful depiction of the drug cocaine and its ability to control and even seemingly “talk to” its victims has impacted the lives of hundreds of people who have seen it. However, hope for a new life is offered through Jesus Christ.

Summer Child Enrichment Program – This weekly outreach for children provides a unique opportunity for them to participate in Bible Clubs and creative learning activities on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pizza, soft drinks, and lots of games round out the fun!! Children between the ages of 4 – 14 years old are welcome to attend. This year’s program begins on Saturday, July 19 and runs through Saturday, August 16. For more information or to register your child for this program, call 330-762-8884 or visit our “Programs and Services” web page.  Below children participate in creative learning activities during our first session this year!

EDUCATION:

After School Programs:  “BHC” has provided after school programs for more than ten years to Akron Public Schools Community Learning Centers.

As a sub-grantee of the Perkins Activities Central (PAC) program for the past five years, our after school activities were included in a study by Dr. Debbie Shama-Davis, Bureau of Research, Kent State University showing that in almost every area students who attended PAC programs frequently over a two-year period had higher reading and math achievement scores and passing rates, better attendance, and better behavior. This research shows the value of our after school program to the students we are serving.

The Student Leadership Development Program is an expanded version of our initial PAC after school initiative. This program incorporates many of the 40 developmental assets identified by the Search Institute necessary to help young people grow into healthy, caring, and responsible adults.

Student Leadership Development provides a comprehensive three-phase program in the following key areas: leadership development, entrepreneurial education or creative arts, and community reinvestment and gives students a creative and encouraging after school environment, learning enriched opportunities that help to discourage self-defeating behavior, and training to help them develop positive leadership skills.  For more information or to register your child for next year’s after school program call 330-762-8884 or visit our “Programs and Services” web page.

PREVENTION:

Student Communication is one of the special programs designed to help youth avoid destructive behavior such as gang membership, drug use, and criminal activity. This program employs high school teens and trains them in the production of video/DVD programming.  Students conduct the research for the project, help write the scripts, and act in the production under the supervision of the program director.  Students have produced prevention videos that have been used by the Ohio Department of Health, Pregnancy Centers around the country, and in schools.  For current prevention programs visit our "Programs and Services" web page.
